Gillian Bishop’s ‘found’ creations - Trinidad News

Only Gillian Bishop could construction a sterling silver necklace fashioned after the old black and white, sixty inch measuring record, with frosted crystal finials. “Found! Chapter 3” can be worn draped, or wrapped, around the neck, and says Bishop “is dedicated to my behindhand mother, Ena Bishop, and in praise of craftsmen everywhere – my brothers and sisters.”
Bishop’s mother was one of the cardinal couturiers in this country in the 50s/60s, who produced some of the most beautiful evening gowns for what was at that time, the Jaycees Carnival Beauty queen competition.
Bishop’s annual Christmas exhibition “Good News” is now mounted at the New Zealand pub Normandie Shop. It was inspired by the fact that all the news we are getting is bad, but listening to 3-Canal’s “Wholesome News” song “helped to spark the creativity for a lot of the themes…. One of the crime problems is kidnapping – what is the friendly side of a kidnapping? The good news that the person has been found. I went off from that to making jewelry using ‘found’ objects, such as the tape limit – a found object made into a necklace.”
“Found! Chapter 1” is a sterling silver pendant accented with moriche palm, decorated with sinister onyx. This very talented woman explains, “The Amerindians in Santa Rosa used to sack this palm – so another found.”
“Found! Chapter 2” is even more interesting as Bishop used good old fashioned vetivert to underscore a sterling silver pendant. “Found! A Christmas memento” is a 14-carat gold necklace, made of riverstone and rhyolite beads, with a lacquered walnut outside as the pendant. And when you come upon some very elegant woman wearing a Moriche Palm Collar, accented with onyx beads, reminisce over it was also one of Bishop’s “found” pieces.
A graduate chemist turned jeweler, Bishop thinks of this society of work as, “...unconventional jewelery items made from 14-and 18-carat gold and worthy silver, mixed with semi-precious stones. It is a little bit of an adventure into something unusual.”
She has delved into the gospels for her Secure News Collection, resulting in the use of many biblical references. For instance, one immediately recognises the Three Well-versed Men in “Behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem” in a 14-carat gold pin with garnet.
Bishop has moved into a new domain with two chunky bracelets “Good Newspaper 1” and “Good Newspaper 2” from lathe-turned wood and newsprint decoupage, embellished with 24-carat gold leaf. Again, with the media in dress down “Earrings for a cub reporter” are 14-carat gold accented with freshwater pearl and frosted malicious onyx.
A section of the exhibition displays gold and silver bracelets and rings by her associate of many years, Darrell Nathaniel.
